The SAC’s B-29s would be supplanted by the B-50s represented by this B-50D-95-BO Superfortress, 48-096. 48-096 would be converted to an EB-50D as mother ship for X-2 program. On May 12, 1953, X-2, 46-675, exploded in belly of the mothership, X-2 was dropped into Lake Ontario, and mothership limped back to Niagra Falls Airport, N.Y., but never flew again.
