Aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran sets a world airspeed record of 652.337 mph over a 100 km closed course at Edwards AFB flying a Canadair built North American F-86E Sabre powered by an Avro Orenda turbojet engine. Her record exceeds previous ones held by Air Force test pilots and an earlier women's record of 534.375 mph set by French aviatrix Jacqueline Auriol.

The American Aviation Historical Society, organized more than fifty years ago, is dedicated to documenting and sharing information about the people, places, planes and events that comprise American aviation. The Society is a registered 501.3.c non-profit educational organization and welcomes all individuals with an interest in American aviation to its membership.
