This excellently written and well researched work chronicles the development and history of the Springfield, Ill., airport. Starting with the farm fields that were used in 1858 for balloon ascensions, through the barnstorming and Golden Age periods of the 1920s and 1930s, and on up to the airport’s current state, the reader is able to trace the evolution of a regional airport. Just as important to the airport, were the key players, both local and national figures, that helped drive its development.

While the book has obvious local appeal, it is important to the aviation historian because it clearly documents airport evolution within the U.S. While specifically about Springfield, it just as easy could represent the development of many local and regional airports across the country.
